The URJ Camp Newman and the Bureau of Jewish Education of San Francisco are pleased to announce the kick-off of Camp Nefesh , a “camp within a camp” for youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other special needs.
Scheduled for August 13-19, 2010 at the beautiful Camp Newman camp facilities in Santa Rosa, California, Camp Nefesh will offer the opportunity for Jewish youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders to have a wonderful and a unique summer camping experience.
The program’s mission is to honor the unique characteristics of every camper and provide access to Reform Jewish camping by creating individualized accommodations and modifications that allow each camper to succeed.
The Camp Nefesh campers will be grouped in their own unit with specially trained staff and will participate in modified camp activities, interacting with the larger camp community for meals, community-wide programming and celebration of Jewish ritual and worship. The program will allow campers to participate fully in the Jewish camp experience in a safe and nurturing environment that fosters positive self-esteem and social skill development. Trained counselors and professional staff will be present and supporting campers at all times. Camp Nefesh participants will take part in daily Camp Newman activities such as art, drama, dance, sports, Alpine Tower, swimming, and music and will experience the Jewish community through worship, ritual, song and other spiritual activities.
We invite you to register your child or encourage others in your community to participate in this exciting camp session, the first of its kind in Northern California!
