Sixty Years of Summer

Sixty... when you think of that number, do you think about it being the new thirty? Perhaps you fondly remember Bing Crosby and Marilyn Monroe. When we think about it, we revel in all that has been accomplished in sixty years of URJ camping.

One Camp is Not Enough URJ Jacobs Camp It's not surprising that Jacobs Camp Director J.C. Cohen sends his own kids to camp. What you wouldn't guess is that he sends them twice! After the Jacobs session, J.C. sent his kids to different URJ camps to reap the full benefits—responsibility, friendship, and most of all, independence—of really going away to camp. Read more »
"How Did You Pray When You Were Younger?"  RJ.org: News & Views of Reform Jews As a young camper at Coleman, Rabbi Melissa Zalkin Stollman thought the only place God existed was over the camp lake in Cleveland, Georgia. Now serving as a faculty member at Kutz, she credits her camp prayer experiences as a child with her appreciation for music, nature and stimulating worship today. Read more »
Crane Lake's T'filah Goes Visual URJ Crane Lake Camp
During a recent t'filah experience, the writing was literally on the wall. Campers did not carry their typical prayer cards; instead, camper-produced photos overlaid with prayers were projected onscreen. Not only did this prompt new ways of seeing meaning in worship, but the photographers "connected Judaism to their hobby." Read more »
From North American Reform Temples to the Ancient Temple  in Jerusalem and Then Back Home Again NFTY in Israel The teens on NFTY in Israel are following in the footsteps of history! While visiting the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, they learned about the traditions many of them still practice in their home synagogues today that originated in that very spot. Read more »
Swabbing Our Way to Mitzvah Hero Status  URJ Camp Kalsman
When 6-year-old Sammy was diagnosed with leukemia, his parents, both OSRUI faculty members, asked supporters to take photos for "Superman Sam" to give him strength. Leave it to Camp Kalsman to take a superhero picture sixty strong—and save lives by supporting the Gift of Life bone marrow registry in the same week! Read more »
Camp Coleman's Influence URJ Camp Coleman
Camp is, without a doubt, a place of indescribable joy—just check the statistics! What other Jewish experience do we give our kids that makes them beg for the chance to do it again? Fireflies Over Kutz RJ.org: News & Views of Reform Jews A woman who never went to camp is at Kutz, sitting in a pagoda overlooking the expanse of Lake Rolyn. Listening to the bullfrogs, she wonders whether she will ever feel a real connection to this place so loved by her friends and colleagues—when, out of nowhere, a magical encounter with a firefly offers the answer. Our Friend Randy Parsons  URJ Camp Kalsman The Camp Kalsman community was saddened to find out that Randy Parsons, the first employee and caretaker of camp, recently lost his battle with cancer.
