Camp Community Knows No Bounds
The Clipboard: News from the URJ Camp and Israel Programs

June 21, 2012 | 1 Tamuz 5772

It is often at the most extreme moments in life when things become most clear. This week, we learned Rabbi Phyllis Sommer's son is fighting leukemia. Rabbi Sommer is a faculty member at OSRUI and works tirelessly to build a supportive Jewish community each summer at camp.

It is unfortunate tragedy that reminds us the Jewish community transcends place and time and sustains and supports us all year, every year. We pray for Rabbi Sommer's son's well being and we pray each summer at every camp that the community we build continues to sustain body and soul.

Recharging at Camp Coleman

It didn't take long for Beth Zarefksy Young, Director of Education at a synagogue in Florida, to remember how much she loved camp. During her recent visit, she found Judaism everywhere  from the sound of 400 voices singing HaMotzi to noisy cabin cheers, from the zip line, up the ropes course and through the ga-ga pits. Read more »

A View to a Grill

Between 240 campers, 100 staff, 267 acres, 38 buildings, seven incoming phone lines and two internet-enabled devices, Jacobs Camp Director J.C. Cohen is one busy man! Luckily, he is able to slow down every week as he takes to the grill for the Sunday night cookout, appreciating the magic of camp right before his eyes. Read more

As URJ Camp Harlam's opening day approaches, songleader Max Chaiken takes a moment to reflect on his time at Hava Nashira, a songleading workshop held recently at OSRUI. So how was it? "In every year, in every song, in every sunrise, I feel a stronger sense of purpose, commitment and spiritual growth," he said. Read more

Leadership Through Depth, Purpose & Character
URJ Kutz Camp

As NFTY's youth leadership gathers today for their yearly board meeting, the Kutz staff looks back to last week when the URJ's adult leadership visited for a staff retreat. It's clear that Kutz embodies what URJ President Rabbi Jacobs recently summarized: Jewish life, like Kutz, is about developing "depth, purpose & character." Read more

An Anthem for Summer: Chazak V'amatz, Be Strong
URJ Jacobs Camp

The first Shabbat of camp is always a magical one, and Rabbi Scott Hausman-Weiss's creative D'var Torah at Jacobs Camp made it even more so. Find out what happens when "the Israelite campers, drawn from all parts of the South" investigate "the Promised Land" of camp to find that the real magic of camp is in us. Read more

As You Teach, You Learn
URJ Greene Family Camp

Rabbi David Komerofsky, Executive Director of Hillel at the University of Texas, has traded campus life for camp life for the past 13 summers! This year, while preparing for the campers to arrive, he developed some creative new ways to teach Jewish curriculum to kids who would sometimes, admittedly, "rather be swimming."
